Galvanized vs Powder Coat
Unity Slams The Door On Corrosion.
Unity has implemented the latest in coating technology for   metal components.  It is a dry powder coating, not a paint.
Unity began its study in 1987, determined to find a superior finish to our liquid system.  We wanted a product that not only looked good but, more importantly, would last for years without rusting or chipping.  The O'Brien Powder Products Company teamed up with us to accomplish these goals.
In 1992 Unity installed one of the largest powder coating systems in the Southern United States
The Application
The steel enclosures are conveyored through a four stage washing system which pre-treats them before the urethane powder is applied.  All parts are sprayed with an alkaline cleaner to remove all foreign materials and then thoroughly rinsed.  The metal is iron phosphate etched to provide a surface to which the powder will bond and then fresh water rinsed.  The parts are dried, inspected and electrostatically coated with a urethane powder product and cured to a hard, weather, chemical and chip resistant finish.  Because the powder particles are attracted "electrostatically" to the metal, they are distributed evenly over the ENTIRE surface of the product which includes all edges.  The urethane is baked at 400 degrees for more than 15 minutes.  This curing process, known as thermoset, permanently cross links the resin molecules together while developing a tight bond between the urethane resin and the metal.  This process results in a finish that has improved toughness, flexibility, and chemical and corrosion resistance.
Galvanized vs. Powder Coating
Mill applied galvanized coatings are degraded or entirely removed by the manufacturing process of shearing, bending, and welding.  Shearing creates raw steel edges.  Bending opens microscopic cracks and welding damages and burns through the galvanize.  All of these processes open the door to corrosion in galvanized products.  In contrast, Unity's U.L. recognized powder coating is applied after, rather than before these potentially degrading manufacturing operations, effectively shutting out corrosion and the competition.  Salt spray test confirm that Unity's U.L. recognized powder coating process is superior to galvanize (See our photo above.)
